Lihnell’s Distillery, a Swedish family-owned craft distillery with a deep-rooted passion for whisky, proudly announces the launch of its first self-distilled single malt whisky: Hemfjärden. This milestone marks an exciting new chapter for the distillery, previously known for handling the remaining whisky stock from Grythyttan following its closure in the early 2010s. With Hemfjärden, Lihnell’s steps into the future with its own handcrafted creation—one that pays homage to its Swedish heritage while embracing innovation in whisky-making.
A Distillery on the shores of Hemfjärden
In 2024, Lihnell’s Distillery relocated from Örebro to the historic Hjälmarsbergs Manor and Estate, nestled on the scenic shores of Lake Hjälmaren. This setting provides the perfect inspiration for the new whisky, named after Hemfjärden, the lake’s inner bay. The tranquil surroundings and pure natural environment play an essential role in the whisky’s maturation process, adding to its unique character.
A masterful blend of Swedish oak, bourbon, and sherry casks
Hemfjärden is carefully aged in a selection of Swedish oak, bourbon, and Oloroso sherry casks, creating a balanced yet complex profile. This combination of cask types enhances the whisky’s depth, adding layers of flavor that evolve with every sip.
- Aroma: A refined bouquet of dried fruit, pear, and vanilla, with hints of coconut, hint of smoke, and a touch of an herbaceous garden.
- Taste: A rich and layered palate featuring dried apricots, golden raisins, and smooth vanilla fudge, intertwined with spiced oak and subtle nutty undertones.
- Finish: A lingering, well-rounded cask character with a delicate smoky whisper that adds an elegant touch to the aftertaste.
By utilizing Swedish oak, known for its ability to impart bold spice and robust tannins, along with the sweetness of bourbon casks and the depth of Oloroso sherry, Hemfjärden achieves a harmonious balance between tradition and modern whisky craftsmanship.
