It’s time to revisit a Gotland whisky matured in Caribbean rum casks. The last such occasion was in 2023, with the launch of Salvorev—a release that quickly gained popularity among enthusiasts. Now, the Swedish whisky distillery Gotland Whisky returns with a new expression that captures both island character and international flair.
This summer, Gotland Whisky proudly introduces Barshalder, a limited-edition single malt that blends tradition, terroir, and tropical influence. The name Barshalder is drawn from southern Gotland, home to one of Scandinavia’s largest Iron Age burial grounds and a striking 19-meter-long ship setting—a nod to both heritage and journey.
A Marriage of Smoke and Sweetness
Barshalder combines both unpeated and peated malt whisky, carefully matured in barrels that previously held rum, notably from Jamaica. The youngest cask in the batch was just 25 days short of 7 years, giving Barshalder a mature and balanced profile.
In the glass, it evokes summer with notes of sun-drenched citrus, warm molasses, and a gentle ash-like smokiness. The rum cask influence adds layers of complexity, delivering sweet, tropical aromas followed by a smoky, lingering finish. This is a whisky that captures the spirit of Gotland in summer—bright, bold, and inviting.
Release Details
Barshalder will be available starting Monday, June 7 at 10:00 AM through the Systembolaget special order assortment. In addition, Barshalder will be available for tasting and purchase directly at Gotland Whisky’s distillery in Roma via gårdsförsäljning (farm-gate sales).
Farm-Gate Sales in Full Swing
Gotland Whisky’s farm-gate sales are now well underway, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the past week, the distillery has welcomed a stream of curious and enthusiastic visitors, eager to sample and learn more about the craft behind the island’s unique whiskies.
Under Swedish regulations, farm-gate sales allow small-scale producers of beer, wine, and spirits to sell directly to visitors at the production site. At Gotland Whisky, visitors who are at least 20 years old and participate in a paid guided tour are eligible to purchase up to 70 cl of whisky—and enjoy a tasting of what’s on offer.
