Sjötroll from Lihnell’s Distillery

Acclaimed Swedish whisky distillery Lihnell’s Distillery proudly announces the release of SJÖTROLL, the final installment in its limited edition 2025 whisky trilogy: TROLL. Following the successful releases of Skogstroll and Bergatroll, Sjötroll completes the journey through Nordic folklore with a bold, maritime-inspired single malt expression.

SJÖTROLL will be available via Systembolaget starting Monday, August 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM, under article number 34312. Only 750 bottles will be released, priced at 927 SEK.

Crafted by Master Blender Carl Lihnell, Sjötroll is a 13-year-old Swedish single malt whisky aged in Bourbon and Madeira oak casks, bottled at a robust 54% ABV. The distillate is entirely unpeated, allowing the cask influence and maturation time to speak clearly.

A Taste of the Depths

Inspired by ancient lake-dwelling trolls of Scandinavian legend, Sjötroll evokes the mystery of deep, still waters. According to folklore, these elusive beings are rare among trolls for their affinity to lakes and tarns. Unlike their land-bound cousins, sjötroll are known to tease fishermen by transforming into trophy-sized pike or perch—only to revert and vanish back into the water just as the catch is hauled in.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright and fruity with ripe pear, honey, raspberry, vanilla, dried apricot, and a hint of hazelnut cream.

  • Palate: Sweet and buttery with flavors of browned butter, almond, wild strawberry jam, and chocolate.

  • Finish: A lightly oxidized nuttiness with a tangy citrus close of pomeranian zest.

The TROLL Trilogy

The TROLL series is Lihnell’s 2025 tribute to mythical Scandinavian creatures, featuring three distinct single malts:

  • Skogstroll – evoking the deep, mysterious forests.

  • Bergatroll – reflecting the rugged power of the mountains.

  • Sjötroll – the final release, inspired by the folklore of lake trolls.

Each expression in the trilogy has showcased different maturation techniques, cask influences, and interpretations of Sweden’s natural and mythical landscapes.
