Gotland Whisky Isle of Lime Fjäle

Gotland Whisky proudly introduces Isle of Lime Fjäle, a richly crafted 7-year-old single malt whisky shaped by the island’s unique landscape, tradition, and time. Released on 8 December 2025, Fjäle will be available through Systembolaget’s special order assortment as well as selected stores in Gotland (temporary, local & small-scale assortment).

Fjäle continues the Isle of Lime heritage of producing organic, terroir-driven whisky exclusively from Gotland-grown barley (see Lergrav, Bläse and Barshalder). With 3,564 bottles crafted, this release presents a rare opportunity to experience one of Sweden’s most characterful whiskies.

A Whisky Born of Wood, Wind, and Time

Fjäle has matured for seven years in a precise combination of Swedish, French, and American oak (Quercus Robur and Quercus Alba).

  • The 16 Swedish oak casks—charred and sized at 50 liters—have been reused between five and seven times, imparting a balanced influence of oak, grain, and smoke.
  • French Cognac casks (400 liters), medium-toasted, contribute structure, fruit, and warmth.
  • American bourbon barrels (200 liters) lend softness and vanilla depth.

The casks were filled between February and July 2018 and bottled on 13 October 2025 at an ABV of 46%.

Fjäle is distilled using Gotland Whisky’s lightly peated recipe (approximately 20 ppm). The cut to heart begins 30 minutes into the spirit run, yielding a clean yet smoky character. The barley—organically grown and certified KRAV—comes exclusively from the island.

Tasting notes from the distillery show impressions of grain sweetness, soft peat, subtle ash, and highlights reminiscent of liquorice and roasted oak.

A Name with a Story: Fjäle

Fjäle is named after Fjäleängar, one of Sweden’s best-preserved deserted medieval farm environments. For over a thousand years, a farm once stood on this land. It was abandoned in the mid-14th century—possibly during the plague—and today the site remains a cultural landscape of rare authenticity.

Local folklore tells of the Fjälebysen, a wealthy and temperamental farmer whose anger once cost him both life and homestead. It is said that his presence still lingers over the land.

““In this landscape—shaped by myth, memory, and centuries of silence—our whisky has matured,” says Christer Roslund, Chair of Gotland Whisky. “Fjäle is still, proud, and molded by the passing of time. We are delighted to share the result of seven years of patience.”
